LIAB shows off at Tokomairiro A & P Show.

Claire Concannon – Science Outreach Project Coordinator.

Last December the Healthy People Healthy Planet project went along to Tokomairiro A&P show in Milton showgrounds. Lab in a Box got prime positioning next to the main stage and physiology researcher Toni even got involved in one of the shows! Support from the Community Lotteries Fund has allowed the Healthy People Healthy Planet project to travel to different community events around Otago and Southland. With Lab in a Box as our base, scientists from the University of Otago and science communicators from the Otago Museum have been doing fun experiments and activities on how to look after your brain and body (Healthy People!) and how to combat climate change (Healthy Planet!). At Tokomairiro children and their families learned how to make a brain cell and how our brain can quickly cope with changes. They also learned what is happening to the ice in Antarctica, what this means for sea level rise and what happens to the chemistry of the ocean when it absorbs carbon dioxide. We had a lot of fun and Tokomairiro A & P show, hopefully we get to go back next year!
